For those who are new to training and new to service dogs, we have a few
suggestions for books on basics that ought to be on the shelf of every service
dog owner:
*for basics of obedience: Expert Obedience Training for
Dogs" by Winifred Strickland http://www.wynthea.com/index.html ....nothing
flashy or clicky here....just good, old fashioned practical obedience training.
This author is one of the oldtimers in AKC Obedience training, and has earned 214
Obedience titles...nothing to sneeze at !
* for an **EXCELLENT**
grounding in understanding the realities of the service dog world: Practical
Partners-A Service Dog Research Guide,by Julie Nye. http://www.fieldstone-hill.net/books.html ...this
is without a doubt the *best* book out there on the topic of service dogs. This
book is not actually about the nuts and bolts of training, though you can learn a
lot about the process here. It covers topics such as the types of SDs, the
question of ID and certification of SDs,the psychology of choosing and training
the proper dog for the job,and-something I have seen no where else!-a chapter on
the subject of SDs and children, including the SD in school.
*for the
actual training of service dog tasks: Teamwork I and II by Stewart Nordensson
and Lydia Kelley http://www.topdogusa.org/teamwork.html ....these
are *excellent* books on the nuts and bolts of the actual training of service
dog basic tasks. With these, you can train your dog in most of the commonly
needed tasks of wheelchair pulling,retrieving,brace/balance work and so on. This
is covered in Teamwork II,the first covers obedience training for the disabled
owner.
